With broken hearts, the family of Warrant Officer Edmond Comeau, CD, retired, announce his passing on 27 June 2026 at the age of 86. Ed was the son of the late Alphee Comeau and Eva Barrieau, grandson of Simon Comeau and Dina Leblanc, and of Jacques Barrieau and Marie Leger.
Survived by his sons Major Marc Comeau, MSC, CD, retired (Christina) of Ottawa, ON, grandchildren Zachary and Elizabeth; WO Brian Comeau, CD, retired (Sgt. Shirley Cann, CD, retired), Fredericton, NB, granddaughter Samantha Briere (Ally Rhodes) and Ed’s first great grand-daughter Aspen; and Darren (Charlene Walker) and grand-daughter Elise, of Fredericton, NB.
Ed is also survived by his siblings Emery (Doris Leblanc) of Manchester, Conn; Dina (Francois Richard) of Leominster, Mass., Rose-Alma (Ola Arsenault), of St. Charles, NB, Claudette (Eric Richard) of Gardiner, Mass., and Marie (Marc Pomerleau) of Glastonbury, Conn., and many nieces and nephews.
Ed is predeceased by his beautiful and loving wife of 58 years, Bess (née Curwin) of South Kouchibouguac, NB; his sisters Juliana (Delphin Vautour), Jeanne (Leo Richard), Melina (Jos. Ouellette), Emma, and his brothers Roger (Maria Babineau), Camille (Cecile Daigle), Delphis (Florence Cormier), Gilles (Rosella Curtis) and Alphee (Darlyne Hudson).
Ed grew up in St. Ignace, NB, loving school and his freedom to explore. He would often accompany his father on his corner-store truck deliveries, being rewarded with a "warm" Pepsi at the end of a hard day. His parents both died when he was very young, and Ed became an independent young man. In 1963, Ed joined the RCAF as a firefighter, and then married the love of his life Bess on the West Coast. By train and then by plane, they flew to France where he was stationed. Ed and Bess were later transferred to Germany and returned to Summerside PEI, in 1967. Ed eventually remustered as an aircraft refinisher, to spend more time at home with the kids.
As his kids grew, Ed got very involved with coaching hockey where his emphasis on the basics and equal ice time led to the boys’ teams winning tournaments in PEI, NB, Quebec, Ontario and Alberta. Always the innovator, Ed used his refinishing skills to create Velcro hockey straps, the shooter tutor, and the junior sized hockey stick, all ahead of their time.
Ed and Bess retired to Rexton in 1988 to reconnect and enjoy time with friends and family. Never idle, Ed took a job at the Richibucto Home Hardware. Ed loved gardening, playing cards, and wood working. He was a member of the Legion, and a keen genealogist, helping with many Comeau reunions.
After 20 years in Rexton, they packed up and moved with their dog Beau to Fredericton to spend time with their granddaughter Elise. They enjoyed many Wednesday lunches with Elise and the Connaught St. crew at the Sunshine Diner. Never one to slow down, Ed served as president of his condo board and made many new friends in Fredericton. After Bess passed, he moved to the Shannex residence where he spent time working with his computer on family projects, playing cards and puzzling.
Ed always spent his time helping and thinking of others, sharing jokes, and never asking for anything in return.
Thank you to all who cared for Ed recently and in the past; the staff at the Fredericton Shannex (Governors, Brunswick and Thomas Halls), 4W and 3E at the DECH, and especially Dr. van Middlesworth, who cared for Ed over his years in Fredericton.
There will be no visitation at this time. Ed will be interred at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa, ON. at a future date.
For those wishing to donate in love and remembrance, please do so to the charity of your choice and support your local Legion. Please leave your condolences, warm wishes and memories of Ed. And finally, a few words of wisdom from Ed, remember to check your smoke detectors and always keep an extra flashlight on hand.
