It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Glen Russell Joseph Polchies, who began his journey to the Spirit World on April 22, 2026, from his home in St. Mary’s First Nation, surrounded by the love of family and friends. Born on May 17, 1948, Glen lived a life grounded in community and the family he cherished. Glen was the beloved son of the late Richard and Genevieve (Paul) Polchies.
He will be deeply missed by his devoted and loving wife, Cathy (Parkie) Polchies. He was a proud father to Shelley, Sandra (Dave), and Glen. He shared his children with their mother, Gail Fullarton. He was also a devoted stepfather to Michael Hunter (Kim) and a cherished "bonus dad" to Amanda Bernard. Glen’s legacy lives on through his grandchildren Marissa (Dustin), Myla, Lily, Leah, Tristen, Ashlyn, Joey, Everett, Cole, and Ty, as well as his great-grandson Ryker, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
He is also survived by his father-in-law Gerald Parker; his brother and best friend Claude Polchies; his sister Elizabeth McCoy (late Myles); and his godchildren Heather Currie, Tabitha Brooks, Nathan Paul, and Simon Paul. Glen was predeceased by his brothers Richard/Sonny (Mary) and Allen (late Beverley); his sister Faye Paul (late Franklin); and his mother-in-law Yolanda Duguay (Steve).
Glen was a man of many passions. He found peace and pride in woodworking, especially crafting cedar birdhouses and alder lawn chairs. He had a special place in his heart for his beloved late fur friends, Max, Charlie, and Bella, who brought him years of companionship and joy. His love for the Nashwaak River was evident in the simple joys he embraced—gathering alder, picking fiddleheads, or spending time paddling along its waters.
For 23 years, Glen served with the Fredericton Police Force, where he took great pride in his role as a Community Police Officer. Known by many as one of the friendliest officers in the city, he built lasting connections through kindness, humour, and genuine care for others.
Glen was also known for bringing people together. Nobody made a bonfire quite like he did. He loved sitting around a big fire, sharing stories, cracking jokes, and dancing a jig—he had his own well-known "old Indian trick" for getting those fires going (a little gas and oil never hurt, in his opinion). Those moments will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Honorary pallbearers include Stephen Horseman, Randy Reilly, Frank Paul, Tony Paul, Dave Britton, and Dustin Boudreau.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Ramsey, the DECH Oncology Unit, the Palliative Care Unit, the Extra-Mural nurses, and the staff and nurses at St. Mary’s Veterans Memorial Health Centre for their compassion and care. A sincere thank you is also extended to the community of St. Mary’s for their support during this difficult time, as well as various Band Administration Departments. Glen will be remembered for his warmth, his laughter, and the way he made everyone feel like family. His spirit will live on in the stories shared, the traditions carried forward, and the love he gave so freely.
As per Glen’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, May 1st at 11:00 a.m. at the Maqiyahtimok Centre (247 Maliseet Drive) St. Mary’s First Nation.
