The passing of Frederick Charles Humphrey of Fredericton, NB occurred at Hospice House, Fredericton, on August 7, 2023. He was 98 years old.

Born in Ottawa on Feb 5, 1925, he was the son of the late William Humphrey and Rhoda (Cole) Humphrey. Fred enlisted at age 18 and served in the Canadian

Army during World War II.  He was a member of Morning Gate Church, Fredericton, and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Fredericton, Branch #4.

After the war, he resumed his studies and graduated from McGill University with a degree in Chemical Engineering, then followed a long career with International Paper Company, serving in Temiskaming, Quebec, Hawkesbury, Ontario and New York City, while living in Greenwich, Connecticut.

He was an avid gardener and loved hunting and fishing, especially fly-fishing for Atlantic salmon. Fred took up woodworking as his major hobby and became a self-taught fine furniture craftsman, delighting his family with a treasured legacy of beautiful furniture in pine, mahogany and cherry.

After his wife died, Fred moved to a senior’s apartment building where he enjoyed coffee hours and pot lucks with many fine people over the years.

In June 2022, he moved to Brunswick Hall, Shannex, where he made new friends and so enjoyed the weekly music sessions.

He is survived by daughter Carol Humphrey of Scarborough Maine, daughter Allison Hubbard (Michael) of Fredericton, NB, grandson Kyle Hubbard (Sara) of Fredericton, granddaughter Elise Hubbard of Whistler, BC and great granddaughter Laila Hubbard of Fredericton. He is pre-deceased by his wife Frances (Fleeting).

Many thanks to the caring staff at Brunswick Hall, who made this last year so special for Fred. Also special thanks to the staff at Hospice House who helped make Fred’s last days very comfortable.

Visitation at Bishop’s funeral home Friday, August 11 from 2-4,  followed by a private family gathering.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice House or Parkinson’s Canada.
