Betty Joan (Whitman) Sanderson, 73 of New Glasgow, passed away April 26, 2023 at the Dr. Everett Chambers Hospital in Fredericton, surrounded by her family.

Born in Truro, she was the daughter of Sidney Leonard and the late Roxie Mae (Watson) Whitman. Betty was predeceased by her loving husband of 49 years, Douglas (Doug) Charles Sanderson in 2019. She leaves behind her daughters: Karen Sanderson, Moncton; Gail (Kyle) Caudle, Truro; Cathy (Brad) Detchevery, Fredericton; grandchildren: Roxie, Kristopher, Coby, Daniel, Jordan, Robyn, Tessa and Connor; great-grandson: Ezra, siblings: Phylis Scott (Eugene) Fredericton, Robert (Judy) Whitman, Lansdowne, NS.; Brenda Whitman (Kenneth Hetherington), Hanwell; Vicki Whitman (Al Jones), Scotch Lake; and James (Erin) Whitman, Maugerville, NB.; father, Sidney Whitman, Hanwell, NB; along with several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband and mother, she was predeceased by her grandson, Nicholas Caudle.

Betty was a loving wife and devoted mother, living in various communities throughout the Atlantic provinces where she worked as a teacher and was a volunteer with the Jaycees, Kinettes, and Lionettes Clubs. She was also a member of United Church, taught Sunday school and was a youth leader of Explorers and CGIT (The Canadian Girls in Training). Betty enjoyed many forms of arts and crafts from ceramics, tole painting, smocking, stain glass, knitting to even being a seamstress and creating many of the wedding dresses worn by her daughters and nieces. Betty became very involved in genealogy and charting out the historical records of her family tree from many generations with thousands of names in her databank. Betty also spent many Saturdays with her husband attending local auctions.

Betty was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, who will be greatly missed by her family. A service will be held at Bishop’s Funeral Home 540 Woodstock Road Fredericton, NB on Saturday April 29 at 2pm with Pastor Normand McDonald Officiating. Interment will be held at a later date at Gladstone Cemetery at Four Mile Brook where she’ll be laid to rest next to her husband.
