With a deep sadness but hearts filled with love and joy
we announce the death of Charles Julian Doherty on February
26th,
2023.
Only child of Mabel and Julian Doherty, Charlie was
born in Saint John in 1938. It was here that he met and married his
best friend, Flo (Harlow). Their journey together lasted for 66
years.
Charlie began a career in education which eventually
took him to Fredericton, where he taught at all levels including;
elementary, middle school and extension courses at UNB. His fondest
memories were of the years spent as principal of Garden Creek
Elementary School, his home away from
home.
After retirement in 1993 he agreed to join Father Jack
Dolan as Lay Administrator for Holy Family Parish; a second career
which lasted for 20 years.
Charlie would tell you his greatest joy came from
raising his three sons Mark (Anne-Marie), Tim (Alison) and Michael
(Maggie). His five grandchildren Sean (Moira), Colleen (Kyle), Brian
(Rachel), Erin and Calum, and recently, his great-granddaughter Isla
were also a source of
pride.
Besides teaching, Charlie enjoyed many happy years
coaching in the rinks and ball fields of Fredericton, leading many
teams to provincial and Atlantic
titles.
Charlie’s love of politics was another
passion and he served in many capacities within the Fredericton South
Liberal Party.
Charlie was an avid sports fan and cheered on his
beloved Montreal Canadiens, the Toronto Blue Jays and lived and died
with his Notre Dame football
team.
The family would like to extend thanks to Dr. Athar,
Dr. Baird and the amazing staff of the Extra-Mural Program and
Medigas.
It is with much love and respect that we say so long to
Charlie, our rock! Rest
now.
