It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the peaceful passing of Douglas Hanson at York Care Centre on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at the age of 85.

Born in Fredericton, Doug was the son of the late Lee and Addie (Williams) Hanson. With his four brothers and one sister, they lived in downtown Fredericton in the area known as "Rabbit Town". Much of his early life involved horses, with sleigh rides in the winter and saddle rides in the summer.

Known as a tireless and strong worker, he began at an early age delivering groceries and later helped deliver the mail by wagon or sleigh. Doug would go on to spend many years delivering concrete blocks and bricks around the province, often loading and unloading them by hand. In the late 80s, he moved into long-haul truck driving and travelled millions of miles across Canada and the U.S. He would frequently drop in on old friends while also making new friends along the way. He finally retired nine years ago at the age of 77.

Doug was a patient, kind, and generous man, always appreciative of everyone. He was also known for his storytelling abilities, which made him a hit with many nieces and nephews. He was a member of Journey Church, where he made lifelong friends and spent many years driving a Sunday school bus.

Doug was the ultimate family man. He had a deep love for his late wife Lynette (Woodworth), who passed away four months ago. They were married for 55 years and she would occasionally serve as his co-pilot on his long-distance trips. He was a strong supporter and trusted advisor to his children and their families, and he took great joy in hearing of the adventures and accomplishments of his grandchildren.

He leaves behind his children Jeff (Lynn) of Fredericton, Greg (Shera) of Browns Flat, Patti Lynn (Geoffrey Brown) of Fredericton and his grandsons Josh, Matt, Nate & Noah. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law Dr. G. Fred Woodworth of Fredericton and Darrell (Barb) Woodworth of Lake George, his sister-in-law Miriam Hanson, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife & parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Harold (Joyce), Aubrey (Faye), Ken, and Carl, his sister Glenna (Gordon) Robinson, his parents in law Linwood & Glenna (Cliff) Woodworth, and his sister-in-law Deanna Woodworth.

A time of visitation will be held at Journey Church (131 Duncan Lane, Fredericton) on Tuesday, February 28th, beginning at 12pm. The Celebration of Life will follow at 2pm in the Journey Church worship centre. The service will be live streamed via the Journey Wesleyan Church website at http://journeychurch.ca/specialevents?fbclid=IwAR19BuBR3Bl5Xk9h19H67Gs7LHBKu0d02CNDZCZfQXEZC4DqP-rSRudHFW0.  A private interment will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Bishop’s Funeral Home.

The family would like to express gratitude to the staff of York Care Centre. Their kindness and care made such a difference and he appreciated everything they did. In lieu of flowers, donations in Doug’s memory can be made to York Care Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Society of New Brunswick, Journey Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.
