Our family are very sad to announce that in her
99th year, our dear Mother Mary Rita (Fougere)
Armstrong, passed away on December 31, 2021, at her home in
Fredericton NB, surrounded by her loving family. She was
born in Larry’s River NS, to her parents, the late Margaret
(Doiron) and Charles Fougere and was the second oldest of nine
children.
At three months old Mary’s family
moved to New Glasgow, NS, where Mary grew up and eventually worked at
Scottish Woolen Mills making Army Blankets and Woolworth.
Following the war, the family moved to Truro, NS, where she also
worked at Woolworth ending up as the office manager, then Mary met and
married her late Husband, Basil Armstrong, whose army career took them
to several postings in different areas including Halifax, Iserlohn
Germany, Petawawa ON, Gagetown NB, Valcartier QC, and St.
Margaret’s NB. In 1974 the family moved to
Fredericton NB. With several moves and a young family, Mary excelled
at being a stay-at-home mom where she nurtured and molded her children
into what they are today. Mary was a long-time member of St.
Dunstan’s CWL serving many years as a telephone
convener.
Mary leaves behind her three children, Charles
(Elise) Armstrong of Embrun ON, Clarence Armstrong of Fredericton NB
and Catherine Armstrong of Fredericton NB; three grandchildren,
Camille (Nick) Armstrong of Ottawa, Jean-Luc Armstrong of CFB Kingston
and Mathieu Armstrong of Ottawa; two sisters Helen Wheadon of
Dartmouth and Joan Whalley of Maple Ridge BC; two sisters-in-laws,
Olla Fougere and Della Fougere both of Truro; as well as many nieces,
nephews, and cousins.
In addition to Mary’s parents and her
husband, she was predeceased by six brothers, Leo (Infant), Linus
(Infant), John (Infant), Charles, Raymond, and Clement; two
brothers-in-laws, Clifford Wheadon and Edward Whalley and a
sister-in-law Agnes Mulroney.
