At age 96, Harold passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2015, in Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, Halifax, NS.

Born in Fredericton NB, he was the son of the late Harold Bruce Hayward and Margaret Simonds. As a teen, Harold went to the lumber woods to cut lumber and peel trees for pulp. He worked in the lumber woods until the war broke out. On the 14th of September 1939 he enlisted in the army with the Carlelton York Regiment and was posted to Woodstock. He married his childhood sweetheart Jean MacFarlane on September 23rd just a few short months before leaving to go overseas. Embarking on the Monarch of Bermuda on December10, 1939, Harold was off to war not to return home for 6 years. Following the war, Harold joined the RCAF in 1954 and served until compulsory retirement at age 50. Two weeks later he joined the Canadian Coast Guard and served until 1985.

Harold loved the outdoors. He was the happiest in his little cottage just north of Havelock, ON. Fishing, hunting, wildlife, and working outside were his favourite things to do. Some of his fondest memories are of the cottage in the woods and the people who lived and summered there.
