The family of Agnes "Nan" Lavinia Aird of Fredericton, sadly announce her unexpected passing at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at the age of 92. Born July 11, 1921 in Helensburgh, Scotland, she was the only daughter of the late Arnold Bertrum and Edith Maud (McDougall) Richards.

Nan was a Registered Nurse having graduated from Southland Nursing School, Shorham, Sussex Co., England in 1944. Nan married Serviceman Donald R. Aird in 1945 and the following year came to Canada landing by ship at Pier 21, Halifax, NS. They soon took up residence in Centerville, Carleton Co., NB where Nan began nursing at the Bath Hospital and upon moving to Fredericton, she was first employed at the Fredericton Polio Clinic later the Victoria Public Hospital and eventually the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital from where she would retire in 1986. Nan was a member of St. Margaret’s Anglican Church, Fredericton. An active member of the community, Nan was a member  of the War Brides Club (Fredericton Branch); the War Brides Singing Group, and enthusiastic supporter of the Special Olympics and the Down’s Syndrome Association.

Survived by two sons, John Aird (Zelma) of Fredericton, and Jamie Aird at home; two daughters, Sheila Greenham (Bruce) of Twillingate, Newfoundland, and Daphne Nicolle (Chuck) of Calgary, Alberta; a step-son Winston Aird (Marilyn) of Sudbury, Ont.; four grandchildren, Melanie Aird (Scott) of England, Leanne Aird (Peter) of  Grand Bay, NB, Ian Greenham (Jackie) of Labrador, and Jamie Greenham (Elsie) of Labrador; two step-grandchildren, Kathy and Kenneth; two great grandsons Layne and Maxwell; a sister-in-law Christine Oakes-Richards of England; nephews Mark Oakes-Richards (Tracey) of Australia, Christopher Oakes-Richards ( Bridie ) of England, Brent Mosher (Pat) of Florida, Robert Mosher (Jane) of Oregon, USA,  Robert Kilpatrick (Susan) of Ont., Roger Kilpatrick of Ont.; nieces Gail Oakes-Richards of England, and Jean Harper (Charles) of Mass., USA; a number of great-nieces and great-nephews; cousins.

Predeceased by her parents; husband Donald Roderick Aird (1984); step-son Donald Jr. (1963), grandson Donald Monte Aird (1986), step-grandson Glen Aird (2011) and her only brother Alfred Oakes-Richards (2007).

The family will receive condolences at Bishop’s Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton, on Sunday, March 23, 2014 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. A service celebrating the life of Nan Aird will be held from St. Margaret’s Anglican Church, 775 Forest Hill Road, Fredericton on Monday, March 24, 2014 at 1:00 PM. Rev. Canon Elaine Hamilton will officiate at the service.

Private interment in the Forest Hill Cemetery at a later date. Nan requested that memorial contributions be sent to Special Olympics or the Down’s Syndrome Association. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.bishopsfuneralhome.com .
