Elaine Downey of Lincourt Manor, St. Stephen, NB and formerly of Fredericton passed away on June 9, 2008 at the Lincourt Manor. Born in Stanley, NB she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Effie Belle (White) Gullison and wife of the late Cleighton Downey.

She is survived by her daughters Geraldine Dunlap (James) of St. George, NB, Elizabeth Downey of Fredericton; sons Donald Downey of Lincoln, James Downey of Edmonton, Alta.; grand daughter Lindsey Reid; several nieces , nephews and cousins.

Elaine spent her married life as a housewife looking after her four children, worrying about them when they were sick and when they eventually moved out on their own and weren’t under the same roof. As Elaine was an only child, she also had only one grandchild. Through the years as her grand daughter Lindsey grew, Elaine loved to hear about what new accomplishments and interests Lindsey had. Elaine grew up on a farm in Williamsburg, an only child to Ben and Effie. She moved to Fredericton to work when she was in her mid teens and went on to take a hair dressing course in Nova Scotia. She met her husband Cleighton Downey at the Experimental Farm. He was in the army and the troops were stationed there, training to take part in the war. They were married after he returned from war service.

Elaine and Cleighton lived in Woodstock where Cleighton had grown up. In 1960 the family moved to Fredericton where they lived for many years. Her husband Cleighton died in 1981, so she has been a widow for over 26 years. One of Elaine’s great interests was growing flowers and when she lived in the house on Connaught St. in Fredericton the house was surrounded in summer by many colorful blooms. She also loved cats and really enjoyed having a pet around the house. Elaine was 91 when she came to live in a nursing home, so she had a good many years looking after family and herself. She is at peace after living a long life.

Although there will be no visitation, a funeral service will be held at Bishop’s Funeral Home Chapel 540 Woodstock Road on Saturday June 14, 2008 at 11:00am with Rev. Paul Thompson officiating. Interment will take place at the Rural Cemetery.

For those who wish memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
