It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alexander Joseph Scholten of Fredericton on Thursday November 23rd at the Doctor Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital surrounded by family.  He was 81.  Born in Holland, he was a son of the late Alex and Maria (Weekamp) Scholten.

Alex was known for his strong faith, his love of family and his generosity.  He will be remembered by many in New Maryland where he operated a convenience store for 3 decades.  He loved children and will be remembered by generations of people as the man who gave them suckers.

Alex will be deeply missed by his wife of 51 years Irene (Gallant), their children; Alex Scholten, Daniel Scholten (Rachel), Monique Scholten (James Leach), 4 grandchildren, Emily Leach, Anika Scholten, Joseph Leach and Alex Scholten.  Brothers; Willie (Beatrice) and Tony (Lea), sisters; Sientje Scholten, Nardy Lourenssen (Gerald), Annie Buyting (Harry), Fientje Cameron (Joe), Theresa Scholten, Paula Tomlinson (Wayne), Marilyn Gallant (Pierre) and Liedy Fox (Mark), as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers; Bertus, Benny, Francis, John and Herman Scholten, sisters; Femy, Liedy, Tuusje and Mary.

The family would like to thank Dr. Tom Barry and all of the other medical staff who provided excellent care.  They would also like to thank all of their family and friends who provided comfort, support and care during this difficult time.

Resting at Bishop Funeral Home 540 Woodstock Road Fredericton, where the family will receive friends and visitors on Monday, November 27th, 2017 from 6-9 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Tuesday, November 28th, 2017 at St. Dunstan’s Roman Catholic Church in Fredericton at 11:00 AM with Father Bill Brennan officiating.  Interment to follow in the Hermitage Cemetery.
