It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Ruth Louise Grattan of Fredericton on June 7th 2017 at Paradise Villa at the age of 89.  Born in South Branch Kent Co. she was a daughter of the late Daniel Matthew and Annie Louise (Connors) Shortall.

Ruth was born in South Branch.  After attending Rexton Elementary and St Louis de Kent Convent, she enrolled in the Provincial Normal School graduating in 1945.  She continued her education through extension courses from UNB, Queen’s University and St. Thomas with a B.A., majors in French and English.  During her 37 years of teaching, she taught all levels from a one room rural school, grades 1-8, a French rural high school, a convent, junior high school, and senior high school subjects; from West Branch to Cocagne, to Renous, to Newcastle, to Welsford, to Oromocto and Gagetown.  Her last nine years were spent as Coordinator of French Second Language and late immersion Programs, District 25. She retired in 1985.  During her years in the teaching profession, she served on various committees, held offices at both local and provincial levels of the NBTA, held various offices and served on committees of the NB French Council, various committees of the NB Late Immersion Teachers; attended for many years annual conferences of the Canadian Association of Teacher of French Second Language as well as served on committees of the NB Co-Coordinators Association.  Ruth also found the time for community service.  She was Vice-Chairperson of the Oromocto Public Hospital Board.  She was also a long-time member of Holy Family Parish Church.

Ruth is survived by her 4 children; Susan, Colleen (Kevin), Rosemary and Michael, 3 grandchildren; John Matthew (Melissa) Kristine Ann (Jason) and Willa Ruth. 3 sisters; Marg Helen, Kay and Mary, 1 brother Paul, sister in law Phyllis Shortall as well as many nieces and nephews.  Predeceased by her husband George William Grattan, infant daughter Mary and infant sons Peter and Timothy, brothers James and Raymond.

The family will receive friends and visitors at Bishop’s Funeral Home 540 Woodstock Road on Monday June 12, 2017, from 2-5 PM and at Thompson’s Funeral Home 33 Acadia Street, Richibucto on Tuesday June 13 from 12-1:30 PM. Funeral Mass will be held St Peters Roman Catholic Church South Branch at 2 PM with Father Raymond Desjardin officiating. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
