Maryellen Smith, widow of Lionel Dudley Smith, died on Tuesday January 10, 2017 at the Dr. Chalmers Regional Hospital at the age of 93.

Born in London, England, Maryellen, her husband and son emigrated to Canada in 1949 and resided in Montreal where she joined the staff of the Bank of Montreal, Decarie Boulevard Branch. She resigned from the Bank to accept a position she was offered as Secretary to Dr. B.L. (Bud) Jewett and his wife, Dr. Marie Jewett in their practice at 96 Parliament Square. In 1970, Maryellen and her husband moved to Halifax whilst their son remained in Fredericton with his position as an announcer with CBC Radio.

In Halifax, Maryellen was on the staff of the Halifax Infirmary and became Secretary to Dr. Basil Grogono, Orthopedic Surgeon.

Due to the increasing ill-health of her husband, they returned to Fredericton in 1994 where he died in 1995. Maryellen was a member of St. Margaret’s Anglican Church on Kimble Drive as well as the Ladies Choir and the Server’s Guild.

She considered herself most fortunate to enjoy the love and care of her daughter-in-law, Mae, also her grandchildren Derek Smith (Nancy) and Stacey Smith, her great-grandchildren, Amanda Brown (Jon), Alisha Phillips (Matt) and Michael Smith (Alissa), as well as her good friend Mary Louise Luke. She was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband Lionel in 1995, their only child Barrie in 2011, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

A special thanks to the nurses on 4W at the DECH for their wonderful care while Maryellen was in the hospital and to Dr. Rebecca McGinn for her care over the past few years.

At her request, there will be no visitation or service and cremation has taken place. Her ashes will be interred beside the remains of her beloved husband in the Field of Honor in Forest Hill Cemetery in a private ceremony. Arrangements entrusted with Bishop’s Funeral Home (458-1885).   www.bishopsfuneralhome.com

The world is not conclusion

A sequel stands beyond

Invisible as Music

Positive as Sound

Though my soul may set in darkness

It will rise in perfect light.

I have loved the stars too fondly

To be fearful of the night.   (Sarah Williams: the old Astronomer to his pupil)
