It is with sadness the family of W. John Gay announce his passing in Fredericton, NB on Wednesday, June 8, 2016.  John was born March 9, 1918 in Kingsclear, NB. He was the son of the late George and Minnie (Bishop) Gay.

John was a retired military veteran who served with the 3rd Anti Tank Regiment from 1941-1945.  His impressive military career included training in Great Britain, landing on D-Day, and fighting in France, Belgium, and Holland.  John was the recent recipient of the French Legion of Honour Medal.

John enjoyed many trips with his son Edward, to Holland for the Liberation Ceremonies from 2005-2015.  He was an avid gardener as well as member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4, Fredericton.

John is survived by his daughter, Eleanor Smith (Carl) of Dawson Creek, BC; sons, Edward of New Maryland, NB and George of Fredericton, NB; 2 sisters Margaret Gibson of Fredericton and Frances Maxam of Richmond BC; 4 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; sister-in-law, Jean Kitchen of Fredericton, NB; and special longtime caregiver, Cecilia Whitehouse.

Aside from his parents, John was predeceased by his wife, Laura Blanche (McLaughlin); sister, Jean Olive; and brothers, Robert and Fred Gay, both of Fredericton, NB.

The family will receive visitors at Bishop’s Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 from 12:00 – 1:45pm. A Memorial Service will immediately follow at 2:00pm with Pastor Matthew Maxwell officiating.  Legion Tribute will be provided by The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4, Fredericton.

Interment will follow the Service in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery.  Reception will take place at The Royal Canadian Legion, 199 Queen Street, Fredericton.

Donations may be made in memory of John to the SPCA or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
