It is with sadness that we announce the death of Barbara Katherine Randall of Kelly’s Court, Fredericton on September 13, 2015 at the Dr. Chalmers Regional Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Barbara was born in Toronto on December 12, 1930, to Marguerite (Paton) and Lawrence Douglas. She spent many happy years growing up at her grandmother’s home in Collingwood, ON and moved back to Toronto when she was 14. She left school at 16, taking a full-time job while completing a secretarial course at night. Barb was a quick study and, as a result, was successful in a wide variety of jobs over the years. Her favorite job was a bookkeeper for the Borden Milk Company. In the 1970’s she moved to Moncton, NB and took a job with CKCW radio. Later she worked as a researcher, script writer and script assistant at CBC TV. In 1979 she moved to Fredericton continuing to work in production at CBC until her retirement.

Barbara was active in her community as a member of the Kinettes in Moncton (where she said she lost her extreme shyness and learned to "talk"), and as an active member of the Capital Winter Club in Fredericton. Barbara was proud to be the first woman president of the Capital Winter Club. She was also proud to be a member of Jean Greenbank’s curling team, who won the NB Senior Women’s Curling Championship in the early 1980’s and went on to compete in the national Scott Tournament of Hearts. Barbara was also part of a team that won the NB Mixed Seniors Championship in the 1980’s.

Barbara was skilled in all sorts of crafts….ceramics, quilting, sewing, knitting and crocheting, which she learned from her beloved grandmother. For many years, her beautiful hand-crocheted Christmas ornaments sold out quickly in the Nova Scotia gift shop where they were displayed. She loved her home and her property, and spent many happy hours tending her flowers and trees. Barbara loved all the dogs that shared her life, especially her last dog, the beloved DJ. For a time she breed miniature poodles.

Barbara was a strong, independent woman with a caring and generous heart. She had a wonderful sense of humour, was always up for a party or an outing and remained interested in everything around her to the end of her life.

Barbara will be mourned and missed by her many friends, former co-workers and acquaintances, but especially by close friends Jacqui Lovely, Cynthia Allen and Nancy DuPlessis.

We would like to thank the staff of 4NW for the care given during Barb’s final days, especially Shari, Helen and Roxanne, whose gentle and compassionate care was greatly appreciated.

At Barbara’a request, there will be no funeral service, but we would be happy to meet you and hear some of your "Barb" stories at a reception and celebration of her life on Friday September 18, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM in the (Lounge) at Christ Church (Parish) Church, Westmorland Street, Fredericton.
